Robert Maseruka declared winner of Makerere Guild race

After defeating eight other competitors, Mr. Robert Maseruka, a third-year Bachelor of Journalism and Communication student, was named the guild race champion at Makerere University.

Following Friday elections, which were held under strict security with the army and police deployed, Mr. Maseruka of the college of Humanities and Social Sciences was elected as the 89th guild president of the University.

Over five years have passed since the college last produced a guild president. Mr. Levi Tshilumba, the head of the electoral commission, proclaimed Mr. Maseruka the winner after he received 2,558 votes in the online poll that closed on Friday evening. Mr. Hillary Oremo Odwee, who was his closest rival, received 2,531 votes.

The other competitors were Mark Ssebunya, who received 53 votes, Julius Birigwa, who received 11, Sabiiti Akankunda, who received 2334, and Baraka Nkoyooyo, who received 841.

Others are Andrew Lubinga Ssemakula (186), Emmanuel Wanyama (180), and Evans Murungi (189).

Maseruka’s Background

Maseruka began his educational journey at Kireka Hill Infant School in Mukono District from the slopes of Nakisunga community, where he eventually finished elementary school.

Before starting high school at Wellstar Bright SS, Mukono, Maseruka served as chapel prefect here from 2010 to 2011 and as head prefect from 2012 to 2013 while in primary six and seven.

Maseruka held the positions of chapel prefect in senior years three and four (2015–2016) and head prefect in A-level (2017–2018) during his secondary education.

Maseruka, a son of Mr. Simon Ssetuba and Ms. Joseline Nanfuka of Nakisunga, enrolled in Makerere University in 2020 after being granted a private scholarship.

He served as the 2020–2023 class president and the 88th guild government’s guild representative councilor for the school of languages, literature, and communication.

Following the disqualification of the party’s candidate Margret Nattabi, Maseruka, a former speaker of Nsibirwa Hall, was supported as the National Unity Platform’s (NUP) candidate at the eleventh hour.
