Across the country, prominent personalities gathered in churches to commemorate the resurrection of Jesus Christ on Easter Sunday.
Joel Ssenyonyi, the Leader of the Opposition in parliament, participated in prayers at St. Yusuf Lugalama Church in Kiwatule.
He expressed readiness for reconciliation with Mathias Mpuuga, the suspended vice president of the NUP Buganda region, to address their differences.
Ssenyonyi, who assumed the position after Mpuuga, addressed congregants at St. Yusufu Lugalama Church of Uganda in Ntinda during Easter prayers.
He emphasized that Mpuuga remains subject to the party’s disciplinary actions due to allegations of corruption, asserting the need for adherence to party laws.
Mpuuga has faced pressure to resign following revelations of a meeting in May 2022 where “service awards” were approved for him as Leader of the Opposition.
Despite initially admitting to wrongdoing, Mpuuga later declared his innocence, prompting NUP to suspend him from his position as deputy president for Buganda.
Ssenyonyi clarified that Mpuuga has not been expelled from the party but suspended from his leadership role.
He underscored NUP’s commitment to fighting corruption within the party and the nation, urging unity in addressing such issues.
In the spirit of Easter, religious leaders also emphasized the theme of reconciliation, highlighting the importance of resolving conflicts and promoting harmony in society.
