A radio station manager in Kanungu District was detained by police after allegedly beating a female journalist at the same station.
The manager Nelson Kagote Twinamatsiko assaulted Ms. Anita Tumuramye a female broadcaster at Kanungu FM after she requested payment for an advertisement she brought to the radio station.
Tumuramye claims that she obtained the advertisement on January 26, 2023, for Shs200,000, which was paid in cash. She also claims that she was entitled to a fee of Shs40,000 in accordance with station policies. However, she claims that Twinamatsiko refused to release her commission after registering the transaction.
She claims that Twinamatsiko smacked her in the face, causing the nose to bleed, when she tried to ask him about her commission. She alleges that Twinamatsiko proceeded to beat her while dragging her to the ground.
“I could not walk to the police that night for fear of my life. The next morning, I went to the hospital for treatment and got the medical form which I took to the police. He beat me mainly because I demanded my money from him,” she said.
Twinamatsiko, 51, was arrested, according to Mr. Elly Maate, a spokesman for the Kigezi regional police, who also stated that an inquiry into the incident has begun.
“Reference to the video circulating, where a lady is being beaten by a man, it was reliably established to have been at Kanungu Fm Radio station, when the victim Anita Tumuramye, 24, a journalist at the same radio station and resident of Katate cell western ward Kanungu town council, reported to have been assaulted by one Nelson Twinamatsiko, 51, the manager at the same radio station and resident of the same above address,” Mr Maate said.
According to Mr. Maate, the victim reported the event to the Kanungu police station under CRB 094/2023, where she and the witnesses’ accounts were recorded.
“The Police visited the scene of the crime and documented details, investigations were carried out and the suspect was summoned to record his statement on Wednesday after which he was detained pending prosecution. Case file compiled and forwarded to Resident State Attorney with the charge sheet for further management,” he said.
Ms. Tumuramye claims that the beginning of her problems came with Twinamatsiko’s appointment as manager, which relieved her of several responsibilities she had at the station.
“At first I was working as a cashier, receptionist, news anchor as well as a radio presenter at the same station. When Twinamatsiko was appointed the manager, he relieved me of my cashier and receptionist roles. But he never stopped there, he kept chasing after me and I only remained with only one role of a news anchor,” Ms Tumuramye narrated.
