Career Revival Through Coaching Continuity
NEC FC attacker Richard Basangwa has demonstrated exceptional form during the 2026 Uganda Premier League season, particularly following transfer from Express FC. The 24-year-old has registered five assists and four goals across all competitions, contributing meaningfully to NEC’s strong second-round performance.
Basangwa’s current trajectory represents marked contrast to earlier career stagnation. Despite early promise during Vipers’ junior development program, Basangwa struggled during his senior debut, experiencing confidence erosion that extended across multiple clubs and two years in Egyptian football.
School Football Excellence Provides Foundation
At St Mary’s SSS Kitende, Basangwa established considerable reputation as emerging striker, earning comparisons to Brazilian forward Hulk due to his powerful left-foot shot, exceptional speed, and physical presence. Youth coaches predicted sustained excellence in senior football.
However, the transition proved challenging. Vipers’ competitive depth, featuring established strikers Paul Mucureezi and Milton Karisa, limited Basangwa’s playing time. Subsequent loan arrangements at Gaddafi FC and Egyptian lower-division football failed to restore previous trajectory.
Confidence Restoration at Express
Basangwa credited coach Badru Kaddu with instrumental confidence restoration. Kaddu’s prior coaching relationship with Basangwa at junior levels enabled immediate tactical integration upon his Express appointment. When Kaddu transferred to NEC in late 2025, Basangwa and fellow Express performers followed, establishing immediate chemistry.
Basangwa’s debut for NEC produced immediate impact, scoring two goals in a 3-1 victory over KCCA FC. This performance validated Kaddu’s assessment of Basangwa’s capacity when provided appropriate tactical and psychological support.
Uganda Cup Objectives
NEC faces defending champion Vipers in the Uganda Cup quarter-final, with both teams currently unbeaten across six recent league matches. Basangwa’s consistent performances provide NEC with improved capacity for successful advancement.
