Makerere University’s vice chancellor has suspended a student for inappropriate conduct.
Prof. Barnabas Nawangwe wrote in a letter dated May 8 that he had received information that Mr. Adonia Kizza, a student at the College of Education and External Studies, had conspired with other, unnamed students to sow chaos on campus.
Mr. Kizza is accused of beating fellow students and interfering with classes at the College of Education and External Studies, the College of Humanities and Social Sciences, and the School of Law during an illegal demonstration.
Prof. Nawangwe claimed that his behavior constituted a threat to the well-being of students, faculty, and staff, as well as university property.
“I hereby suspend you from Makerere University with immediate effect and until further notice to allow for further investigations,” Prof Nawangwe’s letter reads in part.
Adding: “By copy of this letter, the dean of students and university secretary/ secretary to the university disciplinary committee are requested to commence disciplinary proceedings against you and to ensure that you vacate the university premises immediately and that you do not appear at any installations of Makerere University until your suspension is lifted.”
This is not the first time a student has been suspended by Prof. Nawangwe for alleged violations of university policy.
Two students and a custodian at Makerere University were suspended on April 6 after they were accused of organizing an illegal guild presidential race debate.
Mr. Robert Sserunjogi, a student in the College of Natural Sciences, was reportedly beaten into a coma by other students during the discussion and then taken to the university hospital.
Mr. Arnold Muganga, a student in the Department of Arts, Drama, and Music; Mr. Isaac Byaruhanga, a student in the Department of Medicine and Surgery; and Mr. Xavier Dhubanji, the custodian of Mitchell Hall, were all subsequently suspended by Prof. Nawangwe.
