Rwenzururu King Charles Wesley Mumbere is set to make a historic return to Kasese District, the heart of his kingdom, after nearly seven years away.
The Omusinga (king) was previously barred from accessing his kingdom as part of his bail conditions, following charges of treason, murder, attempted murder, and other offenses.
His return comes after the charges have been dropped, and his subjects eagerly await his arrival.
End of Seven-Year Absence
King Charles Wesley Mumbere was prevented from returning to his kingdom for seven years due to legal restrictions following his arrest and detention during a security forces raid on his palace in November 2016. With the charges against him dropped, he is now free to return.
Excitement Builds Among the Subjects
His subjects eagerly await his homecoming, and preparations have been underway for this significant event.
Preparations for the Omusinga’s Homecoming
The committee organizing the king’s homecoming, led by Dr. Nathaniel Mumbere Walemba, has made arrangements to receive him.
Some of the king’s subjects have been gathering in Kasese in anticipation of his arrival, engaging in activities like constructing royal huts symbolizing the kingdom’s parliament and singing cultural songs.
Itinerary for the King’s Return
The Omusinga and the Nyabaghole (queen) are expected to arrive at Kasese airfield via chartered aircraft at 11 a.m.
They will proceed to their temporary royal residence at Mbogo Road in Muyenga, Kasese Municipality, where cultural rituals will be performed to welcome the king.
At 1 pm, Mumbere will address his subjects at the golf course in Bulembia Division, Kasese Municipality, followed by a royal dinner at the Margherita Hotel for selected guests.
Government Officials Not Invited
Senior government officials have not been invited to the king’s homecoming ceremony; instead, they have received invitations to the coronation anniversary celebrations scheduled for October 19.
Security Preparations
In anticipation of a large crowd in Kasese Town, the regional police have deployed accordingly.
Only accredited individuals will be allowed to be part of the convoy accompanying the king to prevent overcrowding.
People are advised to gather at the Golf Course, where the King will address them.
The government has also committed to constructing a new palace for the king on his newly acquired land in Kahokya, Central Division, with the UPDF’s engineering brigade overseeing the construction.
