Kampala Metropolitan Police have launched a comprehensive Easter holiday enforcement operation targeting drunk driving and traffic violations across the capital city. The multi-phase crackdown deployed officers at major intersections, highways, and transit hubs to conduct breathalyzer tests and vehicle inspections during the busy holiday period.
The operation focused on high-traffic corridors and accident-prone areas where violations are most prevalent. Officers worked in coordinated teams, utilizing modern detection equipment and communication systems to ensure consistent enforcement throughout deployment areas.
Statistics from the first phase indicate significant enforcement activity. Sixty-five drivers faced arrest following positive breathalyzer tests or documented traffic violations. Additional vehicle impoundments were processed for various infractions, including expired vehicle inspection certificates and unregistered vehicles.
Road Safety Context
The campaign responds to historical patterns showing elevated accident rates during festive periods. Holiday periods traditionally see increased traffic volume, driver fatigue, and alcohol-related driving incidents across Uganda. Police data demonstrates that concentrated enforcement during these periods reduces serious accidents and fatalities.
Kampala city experiences particularly acute traffic challenges during holidays, with rural-urban migration patterns increasing vehicle density significantly. The Easter period typically brings substantial numbers of travelers returning to Kampala from regional areas.
Legal Framework and Enforcement Standards
Arrested drivers face charges under Uganda’s Traffic and Penal Code provisions. Vehicle owners with impounded vehicles must address outstanding violations and pay processing fees before retrieval. The police emphasize that enforcement applies equally to all road users regardless of social or economic status.
Officers received refresher training on modern breath testing protocols and documentation procedures to ensure enforcement consistency and legal compliance. This training underscores the police commitment to professional standards during high-intensity operations.
Future Enforcement Plans
Police announced continuation of the Easter campaign through the holiday period, with particular focus on late-night hours when impaired driving incidents peak. Additional patrols will be deployed to nightlife districts and routes to major entertainment venues where enforcement historically proves most effective.
