In a crucial security move, the Anti-Terrorism Squad successfully neutralized a potential threat by detonating an improvised explosive device (IED) in the bustling Kataba slum of the Kabalagala-Munyonyo area on Friday evening.

Deputy spokesperson for Kampala Metropolitan Police, Luke Owoyesigyire, confirmed that the police received timely information about the suspected IED.

Swift action was taken to recover and safely detonate the device, ensuring the safety of the busy vicinity.

Fortunately, no injuries or casualties were reported, and the police are actively investigating to identify those responsible.

Assistant Superintendent of Police Owoyesigyire emphasized the normalcy of the situation and urged the public to remain vigilant, especially during the festive season, which historically raises security concerns.

“I appeal to the public to remain vigilant. We are in a festive season and have always had a threat of terrorism and a lot of bomb scares around so they should report all matters they see that are unusual so that the police can respond and handle the situation,” Mr. Owoyesigyire said.

This incident follows President Museveni’s revelation in October about the foiled plot by Islamic State-linked militants, the Allied Democratic Forces (ADF), to bomb churches in the central Uganda district of Butambala.

The modus operandi involved explosives concealed as gifts sent to pastors.

With Uganda gearing up to host the 19th Summit of Non-Aligned Movement (NAM) Heads of State and Government, along with the G77 plus China summits in Munyonyo in January 2024, heightened security measures are promised by the government.
