Former Kampala Lord Mayor and People’s Front for Freedom president Erias Lukwago has been charged with misprision of treason.

Mr Lukwago appeared before Makindye Chief Magistrate’s Court on Wednesday afternoon, June 17, 2026, where he denied the charge.

Misprision of treason refers to a situation where a person allegedly knows about plans for an unlawful change of government but fails to report them to lawful authorities.

The court remanded Mr Lukwago to Luzira Prison until Monday, June 22, 2026.

Lukwago Denies Charge

The veteran Opposition politician and lawyer was brought before court after his arrest on Monday.

His detention drew condemnation from Opposition leaders, lawyers and human rights activists.

They questioned the circumstances under which he was taken into custody and called for due process.

Mr Lukwago has been one of the lead lawyers in Dr Kizza Besigye’s treason case.

His arrest came amid heightened political tension linked to legal proceedings involving Dr Besigye and Chief of Defence Forces Gen Muhoozi Kainerugaba.

Court Remands Him to Luzira

After the charge was read, Mr Lukwago denied any wrongdoing.

Makindye Chief Magistrate’s Court then remanded him to Luzira Prison pending the next court appearance.

The case is expected to attract close attention from political parties, lawyers and rights defenders because of Mr Lukwago’s role in Opposition politics and legal representation.

His legal team is expected to pursue the next steps when the matter returns to court on June 22.
