The opposition National Unity Platform (NUP) has published a list of more than 100 of its supporters who it claims were arrested by the police in an operation to prevent a planned march welcoming party president Robert Kyagulanyi, also known as Bobi Wine.
He had returned from international tours in Canada and South Africa on Thursday.
Alleged Detainees
According to the list shared by Kyagulanyi, the number of purportedly detained party supporters has reached 120 individuals, with many more still unidentified.
Bobi Wine, currently under house arrest, estimated that over 300 party supporters and leaders may have been arrested since October 2, 2023, in the lead-up to his return.
“Our legal team, leaders, and other comrades have been able to secure the release of many on police bond, while several others are facing court proceedings on what we consider senseless charges. Our teams are diligently working to address these unlawful arrests. We will prevail,” Bobi Wine posted on Friday.
“The partisan police earlier claimed to have arrested only 40 people, but they are known for their dishonesty. Here is a partial list of our members who remain in detention,” Bobi Wine added.
Police Response
In a statement released by Kampala Metropolitan Police Spokesperson Patrick Onyango on Friday, the police acknowledged the arrest of 40 suspects, including Busiro South Member of Parliament (MP) Charles Matovu, for allegedly inciting violence.
The statement emphasized that these individuals would face charges in court as police operations continued.
The situation surrounding the arrests of NUP supporters and leaders remains contentious and continues to attract public and political attention.
We will closely monitor further developments in this matter.
