Authorities in Jinja District launched a search for a police officer accused of raping a female suspect while in custody.

The officer, stationed at Namaganga police post, allegedly perpetrated the assault on Sunday night, taking advantage of his proximity to the cells.

This incident raised serious concerns about institutional integrity and the safety of detainees.

Kiira region police spokesperson, Mr. James Mubi, expressed dismay over the incident, condemning the officer’s actions as unlawful and detrimental to the reputation of the institution.

The victim, originally detained on charges of child neglect, reported the assault to her husband upon returning home after the matter was resolved between them and the police.

This incident echoes past cases of police misconduct, including a similar allegation in October 2023 where an officer was dismissed for allegedly raping a housewife at Namusita police post in Buyende District.

The recurrence of such incidents underscores the need for robust accountability measures within law enforcement agencies.
