Yoweri Museveni has announced a sweeping Cabinet reshuffle that removes several long-serving ministers and introduces new faces into key government positions as the country begins a new administration term.
The changes affect some of the most influential ministries, including finance, foreign affairs, energy, internal affairs, gender, trade, health and information technology.
One of the most notable changes is at the Ministry of Finance, Planning and Economic Development, where veteran minister Matia Kasaija has been dropped from Cabinet. He has been replaced by Henry Musasizi, who previously served as the ministry’s state minister.
The reshuffle also saw the departure of veteran politician Moses Ali from the position of Second Deputy Prime Minister and Leader of Government Business. He has been succeeded by Crispus Kiyonga.
Meanwhile, Lukia Nakadama retained her role as Third Deputy Prime Minister and Minister without Portfolio.
At the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Development, Ruth Nankabirwa was replaced by Monica Musenero.
The Ministry of Internal Affairs also changed hands, with David Muhoozi leaving the docket and Ephraim Kamuntu taking over.
In another significant appointment, Adonia Ayebare was named Minister of Foreign Affairs, replacing Jeje Odongo.
The ministry’s state minister positions also changed, with Calvin Echodu and Haruna Kasolo appointed to replace Henry Okello Oryem and John Mulimba respectively.
At the Ministry of Gender, Labour and Social Development, Betty Amongi was removed and replaced by Henry Tumukunde.
The Ministry of Local Government was handed to Balaam Barugahara, replacing Raphael Magyezi.
At the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Cooperatives, businessman Sanjay Tanna was appointed to replace Francis Mwebesa.
The tourism sector remained unchanged, with Tom Butime retaining his position.
Changes were also made at the Ministry of Information, Communications Technology and National Guidance. Chris Baryomunsi left the ICT docket and was reassigned to the Health Ministry, while Jane Ruth Aceng was appointed to head the ICT ministry.
Several other ministers were dropped from Cabinet, including Obiga Kania, Christine Adoa, Muruli Mukasa, Moriku Kaducu, Evelyn Anite, Cheptoris, Florence Nambozo, Bwino Kyakulaga, Kenneth Omona, Peter Lokeris, Hamson Obua and Hellen Asamo.
Some of the outgoing ministers have been reassigned as Senior Presidential Advisors. Those appointed to the advisory roles include Hamson Obua, Ruth Nankabirwa, Francis Mwebesa and Evelyn Anite.
At the top of government, President Museveni retained Jessica Alupo as Vice President, Robinah Nabbanja as Prime Minister, and Janet Museveni as Minister of Education and Sports.
The reshuffle marks one of the most significant reorganizations of Cabinet in recent years and signals a new phase in the administration’s governance agenda as it begins another term in office.
