The Uganda Police has received 100 bicycles to help it in the fight against the coronavirus The Uganda Police Force has received 100 bicycles to boost its work in the fight against coronavirus (COVID-19).
The bicycles were donated by Four Ways Investment Limited and Thobani Ventures through the COVID-19 national task force headed by the Prime Minister of Uganda, Dr Ruhakana Rugunda.
While handing over the bicycles, to Mary Karooro Okurut, the Minister of General Duties, the managing director of Four Ways Investment Limited, Charles Bazimbwa, said the bicycles worth sh50m should go to the Police officers involved in the fight against COVID-19.
“We have also provided sh100,000 as maintenance for each of the bicycles,” he said.
The event took place yesterday at the Office of the Prime Minister (OPM) in Kampala. Karooro, who is also the political overseer of the COVID-19 response fund, assured the donors that the bicycles would be delivered to the recipients as requested.
When contacted, the Police deputy spokesperson, Polly Namaye, said Police was discussing how to effectively utilize the donations made to the Police force in this period of COVID-19.
Meanwhile, the Chinese government, through the Chinese Ambassador to Uganda, Zheng Zhuqiang, has donated medical supplies to help in the fight against the pandemic.
The items included 10,000 surgical masks, 2,000 N95 medical masks, 2,000 disposable protective clothing, 500 infrared thermometers, 2,000 medical protective goggles, 10,000 pairs of surgical gloves, and 10,000 pairs of medical isolation shoe covers.
“Today’s donation is only the first batch of China’s assistance to Uganda; the second batch of the donation will come soon,” the ambassador said.
The items were received by the health minister, Dr. Jane Ruth Aceng, at the Ministry of Health headquarters in Kampala.
In other developments, the Uganda Hotel Owners Association contributed sh30m to the anti-COVID-19 fight.
Handing over the money to Karooro, the association’s chairperson, Susan Muhwezi, said: “We are honored and pleased to present our contribution to supplement the Government’s efforts in the fight against COVID-19.” Muhwezi, however, disclosed that hotels have greatly been affected by the pandemic.
