Police in Kamuli Municipality have opened investigations into a case of unlawful wounding after an accidental firearm discharge injured two private security guards.
The incident happened on Friday, June 19, 2026, at around 7:00am at the premises of Blue Light Guards (U) Limited.
The company is located in Bunangwe Zone, Northern Division, Kamuli Municipality.
Busoga North Police spokesperson Samson Lubega said the shooting occurred while a security guard was reportedly carrying out routine firearm safety checks.
Police identified the guard as Anthony Batanda, 23.
According to Lubega, a bullet was accidentally discharged from the firearm and struck two of Batanda’s colleagues.
Injured guards taken to hospital
Police identified the injured guards as Dennis Kabiri, 20, and Hussein Mugolo, 58.
Kabiri sustained an injury to his left toe, while Mugolo was shot in the left leg.
Both victims were rushed to Kamuli General Hospital, where they are receiving treatment.
Lubega urged licensed firearm holders and private security personnel to follow safety rules whenever handling guns.
“You are required to strictly observe firearm handling and safety procedures at all times to prevent injuries and loss of life,” Lubega said.
He also warned that police would hold private security company owners accountable for shortcomings and operational challenges involving their recruits.
Family seeks employer support
Speaking from his hospital bed, Mugolo and his wife, Nabirye Hussein, expressed concern about the financial impact of the injury.
The family said Mugolo is their sole breadwinner.
Ms Nabirye asked Blue Light Guards (U) Limited to provide immediate medical and financial support.
She said many private security guards are left to struggle after getting injured while on duty.
“On numerous occasions, security guard companies have left victims to bear full responsibility after sustaining injuries while on duty. This situation is truly appalling and shocking,” Ms Nabirye said.
Previous case raises similar concerns
The latest incident has revived concerns about the welfare of private security guards injured while working.
On March 25, 2019, Jukira Mohammed Lubwama, now 68, was severely injured during a shooting incident at Pita Oil Petrol Station in Kamuli.
The incident claimed two lives.
Lubwama now relies on crutches for limited mobility and lives in economic hardship in Kyebajatobona Zone, Butansi Sub-county.
He said his former employers stopped giving him financial support five years ago.
Lubwama said he now depends on public goodwill.
“I am truly humbled that NMG, through Spark TV, acknowledged my situation and provided some financial assistance from viewers during their Kyanaku programme. However, since then, I have been in complete economic hardship,” Lubwama said.
Police said investigations into the Bunangwe Zone shooting are still ongoing.
