Speaker of Parliament Jacob Oboth Oboth has hosted senior statesmen and government officials for discussions on regional integration and the proposed East African Federation.

The meeting took place on the sidelines of East African Community Week at Parliament.

Participants examined the history of regional cooperation and the importance of strengthening political, economic and social ties among East African countries.

The engagement brought together former government leaders, serving officials and members of Parliament.

Those present included Prime Minister Emeritus Dr Ruhakana Rugunda and Kabale University Chancellor Mathew Rukikaire, a former Rukungiri District Member of Parliament.

Former Security Minister Chris Rwakasisi, who served during the Obote administration, also attended.

They were joined by Internal Affairs Minister Prof Ephraim Kamuntu and members of the Parliamentary East African Community Forum.

Leaders discuss regional unity

Oboth said the meeting allowed participants to exchange views on how regional cooperation could shape East Africa’s future.

“During the discussions, we shared perspectives on the historical and strategic importance of regional unity,” Oboth said.

The talks also examined the role of national legislatures in advancing the East African Community agenda.

Rugunda said the engagement provided an opportunity to reflect on the case for deeper regional integration.

“Together with the Speaker, we shared insights on the historical necessity of the East African Federation and the value of a united East Africa, which aligns with the theme of the EAC Week,” Rugunda said.

Parliament hosts EAC Week

East African Community Week is taking place at Parliament from July 8 to July 10, 2026.

The event is running under the theme, “Advancing the East African Community Agenda through Legislative Dialogue.”

It has brought together legislators and other stakeholders to discuss cooperation among East African Community partner states.

Key issues under discussion include the harmonisation of laws, expansion of regional trade and efforts to accelerate political federation.

The programme also provides a platform for lawmakers to consider how legislation can support closer cooperation across the region.

East African Federation remains long-term goal

The proposed East African Federation remains one of the long-term objectives of the East African Community.

Discussions around the federation focus on creating deeper political, economic and social integration among member countries.

Supporters of the proposal argue that stronger regional cooperation could improve trade, policy coordination and collective decision-making.

The Parliament meeting placed legislative dialogue at the centre of efforts to advance that integration agenda.
