The State Minister of Health for General Duties, Ms Sarah Opendi was on Saturday forced to hire locals to help push a lead police car that was escorting the government chief whip Ms Ruth Nankabirwa after it got stuck in a muddy road section for three hours.
Ms Opendi had invited her senior colleague to officiate at a fundraising drive for the completion of Amurwo Church of Uganda in Bukedi diocese, Tororo District in eastern Uganda. About Shs26.6 million was collected from the fundraising campaign.
The section of the road that connects Tororo to Mbale districts via Lwaboba and several other roads in the region have posed challenges to travellers, especially motorists as a result of the ongoing torrential rains.
The road conditions have continued to deteriorate with several gaping potholes and eroded shoulders affecting smooth traffic flow.
Mr Joseph Obure, the LC3 chairperson for Merikit Sub County told this reporter that sections of several roads in the area have been cut off after the installed bridges were washed away by the floods.
He added that they reported to the district leaders about the status of their road but they are yet to get a response.
‘’We are so disappointed that even after availing a status report to the concerned authorities including Uganda National Road Authority (UNRA), no action has been taken and we are worried because the roads have continued to worsen,’’ he said.
The district superintendent of works Eng Andrew Asaya during a district budget conference recently highlighted that a big number of the road sections in the district were not motorable.
He blamed the problem to mainly encroachment on the road reserves and wetlands especially by rice growers who block culverts with cut shrubs and rice husks.
