SFC Launches Maintenance Works on Presidential Route in Kampala Central Division

The Special Forces Command (SFC) construction regiment has initiated maintenance works within Kampala Central Division, with a primary focus on the presidential route, a project overseen by Kampala Capital City Authority (KCCA).

Heavily armed soldiers guard the SFC construction regiment as they conduct maintenance on roads near Kololo Independence Grounds.

KCCA Lord Mayor Erias Lukwago expressed uncertainty about the funding source for these projects, given that they fall under the jurisdiction of the Authority.

Lukwago clarified that the “presidential route” was specifically designed to ensure a smooth and pothole-free journey for President Museveni, who frequently travels to Kololo Independence Grounds for public interactions, particularly since the Covid-19 pandemic.

Many of the roads in this area have been in a deteriorated state.

Back in June, President Museveni directed the SFC to take charge of city road maintenance.

He cited a request from his son and senior advisor, Gen Muhoozi Kainerugaba, who proposed cost-effective construction of city roads.

In May, Gen Muhoozi had personally inspected poorly maintained city roads and pledged to employ SFC units to improve them.

Mayor Lukwago stressed the necessity for a comprehensive “Marshall Plan” to address the city’s broader road infrastructure challenges, emphasizing the need for projects benefiting all city residents rather than specific individuals’ preferences.

The Deputy Lord Mayor, Ms. Doreen Nyanjura, revealed that discussions about this matter would take place in an upcoming meeting with executive authorities.

Efforts to obtain comments from SFC spokesman Maj Jimmy Omara were unsuccessful, as repeated calls to his known mobile phone contact went unanswered.

Similarly, KCCA spokesman Mr. Simon Kasyate referred inquiries to the deputy executive director, Mr. David Luyimbazi, but calls to him remained unanswered as well.
