Police have opened investigations into the death of a Senior Four student at Naalya Senior Secondary School’s Bweyogerere campus in a suspected suicide.

Kampala Metropolitan Police deputy spokesperson Luke Owoyesigyire said the incident happened on Wednesday evening at the school’s boys’ section.

According to police, the school administration alerted authorities immediately after the student’s body was discovered inside a toilet block.

“The school administration alerted police immediately, and our team of detectives and Scene of Crime officers from Kira Division Police visited the scene, documented evidence, recorded statements from witnesses, and later conveyed the body to Mulago City Mortuary for a postmortem,” Owoyesigyire said.

Police Recover Handwritten Note

Preliminary police findings indicate that the student was last seen entering the toilet block shortly before his body was found.

Owoyesigyire said police recovered a handwritten note believed to have been written by the deceased.

“The note has been secured, and its contents are being examined as part of the investigation. Police extend condolences to the family, friends, and the entire school community during this difficult time. Investigations are ongoing and further details will be communicated once available,” he said.

Police have not released further details on the contents of the note.

Student Deaths Raise Concern

The incident adds to growing concern over suspected suicide cases reported in schools and universities over the past two years.

Last month, 19-year-old Vanisa Namakoye, a Senior Five student at Mbale Progressive Secondary School, was found dead at her home in Bumutoto Ward, Industrial Division.

Namakoye, a resident of Bunamwani Lower Cell, died just days after her 16-year-old friend, Catherine Nelima, was found dead in another suspected suicide case in Bukisukye Lower Cell, also in Bumutoto Ward.

In March 2026, Juliana Genevieve Mutyaba, a 20-year-old student at Mengo Secondary School, died shortly after the release of the Uganda Advanced Certificate of Education results. She had scored 19 points.

The same month, a student at Kololo Junior School’s Kayunga-Gombe branch was found dead in the boys’ dormitory. The incident prompted the temporary closure of the school as police carried out investigations.

In March 2025, Alvin Ssekandi, a 19-year-old Senior Six student, also died in what family members described as a case linked to pressure around the UACE national examinations.

Calls for Stronger Counselling in Schools

Education officials have pointed to examination pressure, high academic expectations and limited access to mental health support as factors contributing to distress among some learners.

They have called for stronger school counselling services and more open discussions about student wellbeing.

Police say investigations into the Naalya SS Bweyogerere incident are still ongoing.
