The Minister for Kampala City Affairs, Hajat Minsa Kabanda, has urged supporters of the Patriotic League Uganda to mobilise citizens to embrace government poverty alleviation programmes.
Kabanda said many people in rural areas remain outside the money economy. She noted that the Government has introduced several programmes aimed at improving livelihoods.
However, she said some citizens continue to blame the Government while failing to use the available opportunities.
“PLU has a blood relationship with the National Resistance Movement [NRM], we should utilise your support to join us to mobilise people to embrace government projects that can help them to get out of poverty,” Kabanda said.
PLU Launches Greater Luwero Chapter
Kabanda made the remarks on Saturday during the launch and induction of the PLU Greater Luwero chapter.
The chapter covers Luwero, Nakaseke and Nakasongola districts.
The event took place at Arizona Gardens in Busiika Town Council. It marked the first PLU chapter launch held outside Kampala.
The function attracted Patriots Club chairperson Bob Kakuru and several national leaders, including Joshi Baguma.
Other committee members also attended. They included Desire Nangesha, Peace Keeza, Haruna Mbabaali, Timothy Sajawe and Dr Joseph Kibirige.
Dr Kibirige was appointed regional chairperson.
PLU Promotes Tree Planting in Schools
Before the launch, PLU members visited several schools. They planted trees and inducted students into the club.
The programme seeks to sensitise young people about environmental conservation through tree planting.
PLU lists tree planting among its core ideologies. The organisation operates under the patronage of the Chief of Defence Forces, Gen. Muhoozi Kainerugaba.
Kabanda described herself as a committed supporter of both the NRM and PLU.
Leaders Pledge Support to Schools
Speaking at the event, Kakuru said one of PLU’s key objectives is to promote patriotism.
He said the organisation plans to use youth and school-going children to spread its ideology across Greater Luwero. He added that the campaign would later extend to the rest of the country.
“We are going to continue planting trees and ask all our supporters to plant more trees wherever they are as one of our ideologies of protecting the environment,” Kakuru said.
PLU national leader Joshi Baguma pledged continued support to schools in environmental conservation and sports development.
