Justine Nameere, a former television personality, and daughter of agriculture minister Vincent Bamulangaki Ssempijja, was on Thursday sent to prison for six months. The execution and bailiff’s court registrar, Flavia Nabakooza, jailed Nameere over failure to pay sh55m to businessman Emmanuel Muwonge.
Her husband, Raymond Kagimba Mugimba, 38, was also remanded on Friday for allegedly uttering an introduction letter for a loan, purportedly signed by Vision Group Senior Advertising Manager Harriet Mpora to Uganda Micro-credit Foundation Limited.
Kagimba is the head of sales and marketing at Buganda Broadcasting Services (BBS) Television, while his wife is currently the marketing manager for Radio Four. Court bailiff Esther Mukasa arrested Nameere and took her to the execution and bailiff’s division of the High Court, which ordered her imprisonment.
“You are hereby commanded and required to take and receive Nameere into the civil prison and keep her imprisoned for a period of six months or until she pays the debt,” Nabakooza ordered.
Court documents indicate that Nameere sold Muwonge a Mercedes Benz worth sh55m, yet she had placed it as security at Platinum Credit Limited, a local microfinance company. Muwonge demanded that Nameere refunds his money and she accepted to pay it in February, a promise she failed to fulfill.
“We carried out investigations and found that she had many cases and so we decided to deploy people at different police stations with her picture so that she can be arrested,” Muwonge’s lawyer, Allan Tumwesigye, said.
