Joel Ssenyonyi Alleges Plan to Link Him to Butambala Terrorism File

Leader of Opposition in Parliament Joel Ssenyonyi has alleged that there is a plan to add his name to an existing terrorism case before the courts, saying the move is intended to intimidate government critics.

Ssenyonyi made the claim on Friday, saying he had received information about a possible plot to implicate him in terrorism proceedings linked to Butambala District.

“So, I’m told there is a ploy to potentially add me onto the ‘Terrorism’ file of Butambala, or one of those other files in court,” Ssenyonyi said.

The National Unity Platform spokesperson linked the alleged plan to his public criticism of government and his campaign against corruption.

“I’ve said previously; when you fight corruption, it fights back. Similarly, when you fight bad governance, it fights back! But we shall overcome,” he added.

Butambala Terrorism Case

Ssenyonyi’s remarks come as a terrorism case involving fellow NUP member and former Butambala County MP Muhammad Muwanga Kivumbi continues before the courts.

The charges against Kivumbi stem from violent political clashes and post-election unrest that occurred in Butambala in January this year.

This month, Kivumbi appeared before the International Crimes Division of the High Court to apply for bail. State prosecutors did not object to the five sureties he presented.

However, the main terrorism trial suffered another adjournment after the prosecution failed to produce the case file in court.

Defence Lawyers Criticise Delays

The June adjournment has drawn criticism from defence lawyers, who have questioned the continued remand of suspects while the State repeatedly fails to proceed with the case.

Ssenyonyi has not been formally added to the case, according to the information provided in the draft. His remarks remain an allegation of a possible plan to implicate him.
