Speaking at the breaking of the ground ceremony at Aggrey Memorial School in Bunamwaya in Wakiso district, President Yoweri Museveni asked residents and leaders to put much emphasis on development, wealth creation and peace.
“I disagree with the civil servants who demand higher salaries and travel allowances. If we put the emphasis on injecting money in youth and women groups, we shall create jobs and wealth. Issues of salaries can be dealt with later,” the President explained.
President Museveni also said that he found the country in a sort of coma and brought it back to life. He said these roads are part of the 96 roads network that the government is going to tarmac.
“When the NRM came, we found a fainted nation and we resuscitated Uganda and started minimum recovery,” Museveni told his audience. “Now we have commenced on infrastructural development, and my hope is that our wanainchi get wealth and jobs from this development.” He added: “However, we need to utilize our funds better.”
Museveni wondered how civil servants can ask for travel allowances when roads like the one in Bunamwaya have not yet been constructed. He explained that projects like infrastructure are a priority because they directly contribute to development, wealth, job creation and peace.
“Just like the Bible tells us to first seek the Kingdom of heaven and the rest will be added unto us, let us also first seek development, wealth, jobs and peace and the rest will be added unto us,” he stated
Kampala minister Beti Kamya, KCCA acting executive director Eng. Andrew Kitaka, Makindye Ssabagabo MP Sempala Kigozi and Wakiso district chairman Matia Bwanika were among those present.
Asked why KCCA is constructing roads in the Wakiso district, which is not part of the city, Kitaka explained that it is meant “to reduce the traffic jam in the city, KCCA has to construct the roads in Wakiso district”.
KCCA estimates to spend sh97b on tarmacking the Kabuusu-Kitebi-Bunamwaya road. Figures from KCCA show that 208 persons gave away their land and will not be compensated on this project.
The Kabuusu-KitebiBunamwaya road will serve as an alternative route to Kajjansi, Entebbe and thereby decongest the old Kampala-Entebbe road.
“It will also be a connector to major highways such as the Kampala Northern Bypass and the Entebbe Expressway,” Kitaka explained.
