A recent cholera outbreak in Masanda Cell, Mbale Industrial City Division has left a community on edge.

Triggered by the tragic loss of a young woman, Hawa Naula, 19, who succumbed to the illness, the situation has escalated, claiming two lives and hospitalizing eight individuals at Bukasakya Health Centre III.

Hawa, who worked at Mbale Industrial Park, began showing symptoms of cholera shortly after leaving work on February 3, suffering from persistent diarrhea and vomiting until her passing on February 4.

The outbreak extends beyond her family, affecting neighbors like Mr. Mwima Luston, 32, whose wife also works at the industrial park and exhibited similar symptoms.

Although health authorities, including Mbale City Health Officer Dr. Moses Mugonyi, are working to contain the outbreak, fear pervades the area.

Despite efforts to maintain hygiene standards, such as using clean pit latrines and handwashing, challenges persist due to inadequate sanitation infrastructure and water contamination, as highlighted by community leaders like Mr. Steven Masiga and Mr. Joseph Makwali.

Urgent intervention from government bodies and aid organizations like USAID and Spotlight Africa is essential to supplement local initiatives and curb the spread of cholera.
