Buganda Kingdom Prime Minister Charles Peter Mayiga has urged young people from the royal lineage to take up leadership and pursue economic empowerment as a path to stronger communities.
Mayiga made the call at Bulange, Mengo, during a meeting with Kayondo Hope Foundation and the Olulyo Olulangira Youth Network.
The two youth organisations had visited the Katikkiro to brief him on their activities, achievements and challenges.
Youth Groups Brief Katikkiro
Prince Henry Kayondo, the Executive Director of Kayondo Hope Foundation, said the organisation had promoted a savings culture among its members.
He said the foundation started a savings and credit cooperative society four years ago to help members improve their financial discipline.
“In the last four years, we started a SACCO and have encouraged our members to embrace saving,” Kayondo said.
Kenneth Tebandeke, the chairperson of the Olulyo Olulangira Youth Network, raised concern over unemployment among the Balangira youth.
He asked the Buganda Kingdom to consider qualified members of the royal clan for employment opportunities where possible.
“The Balangira youth face a challenge of unemployment, and if there are any positions available in the kingdom, we pray that they can be considered,” Tebandeke said.
Mayiga Calls for Grassroots Leadership
Mayiga commended the two organisations for using their talents and abilities to improve their livelihoods.
He encouraged the youth to remain focused on initiatives that benefit their members and strengthen their future.
The Katikkiro urged them to seek leadership roles, starting within their clans. He said grassroots leadership helps prepare young people for wider public responsibility.
“Where there is no leadership, society is doomed,” Mayiga said.
“Leadership comes from the youth, and it is very important, especially within the clans.”
Mayiga also encouraged the young princes and princesses to work hard while they still have the energy to plan for the future.
“This is the age to plan for the next phase of your lives, and it is very important,” he said.
He reminded them that, as members of the Kabaka’s royal lineage, they carry a responsibility to uphold the dignity and values associated with the royal family.
The princes and princesses thanked Mayiga for his guidance and wished him a happy birthday.
