Uganda’s Minister for ICT and National Guidance, Dr. Chris Baryomunsi, has responded to critics questioning Uganda’s capacity to co-host the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) 2027 with Kenya and Tanzania.

Dr. Baryomunsi dismissed these critics as self-seekers who are merely seeking attention, emphasizing that by 2027, Uganda will have the necessary facilities and resources in place to host the tournament successfully.

Dr. Baryomunsi’s Remarks

Dr. Baryomunsi labeled the critics as individuals who harbor ill feelings towards their own country and stated that their criticisms would have no impact.

He specifically mentioned individuals such as the Lord Mayor, Erias Lukwago, and lawyer Male Mabirizi, suggesting that they were only seeking media coverage with their comments.

He expressed confidence in Uganda’s readiness and the joint efforts of the participating countries.

CAF’s Hosting Decision

On September 27, the Confederation of African Football (CAF) awarded the hosting rights for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations to Uganda, Kenya, and Tanzania.

This decision has generated debate in the media, particularly on social platforms, with many Ugandans expressing skepticism about the country’s ability to host the tournament, primarily concerning infrastructure requirements such as standard stadiums and training facilities.

Dr. Baryomunsi’s Call to Avoid Politicization

Dr. Baryomunsi urged Ugandans to avoid politicizing every national milestone and emphasized the need for unity across political affiliations.

He noted that politics had negatively affected people’s perception of their country and its achievements.

Sports Infrastructure and Investment

Uganda has been making efforts to enhance its sports infrastructure, including the renovation of Mandale National Stadium, Muteesa II Stadium, St Mary’s Stadium in Kitende, and the construction of Nakivubo Stadium, among others.

The government also has plans to build additional stadiums in Hoima and Lira.

Moses Magogo, the president of the Uganda Football Association (Fufa), has been advocating for increased investment in infrastructure development to support the growth of young talent in the country.

The joint hosting of AFCON 2027 is seen as a significant opportunity for Uganda to showcase its readiness to the international sports community and promote football development in the region.
