The Commissioner General of Prisons, Dr Johnson Byabashaija, has announced the promotion of 258 senior officers in the Uganda Prisons Service.
The appointments on promotion were announced on June 23.
They include 20 officers promoted to the rank of Assistant Commissioner of Prisons, 27 to Senior Superintendent of Prisons, 34 to Superintendent of Prisons and 134 to Senior Assistant Superintendent of Prisons.
Dr Byabashaija also announced the transfer of 14 officers across the country.
Another three officers were cleared to proceed on accumulated leave as they await a decision of the Prisons Authority.
Promotions Based on Discipline and Service
Dr Byabashaija said the promotions were based on dedication, discipline and commitment to the Uganda Prisons Service.
He encouraged the promoted officers to maintain high standards of professionalism and continue aiming higher in their service.
According to the Commissioner General, the promotions were made in accordance with Articles 172(3) and 217 of the Constitution of Uganda, as well as Section 10(C) of the Prisons Act, 2006.
“The Prisons Authority decided at the 46th Meeting held on 30th April 2026 at the Ministry of Internal Affairs to conduct the promotions,” he stated.
Transfers and Leave Take Immediate Effect
Dr Byabashaija directed that the transfers and accumulated leave approvals take immediate effect.
The latest promotions and reshuffles come barely two months after the Uganda Prisons Service promoted 4,996 junior officers in April this year.
The Uganda Prisons Service has about 14,300 personnel countrywide.
