Uganda Maintains Facebook Suspension Government Defends Long-Standing Ban on Meta Platform

Origins of the Suspension

In January 2021, Uganda blocked access to Facebook following Meta coordinated removal of hundreds of accounts. These accounts, according to Meta investigation, were operated inauthentically and linked to Uganda Ministry of ICT and pro-government influencers.

Government Rationale

Minister of State for ICT Godfrey Kabbyanga Baluku announced that the suspension remains indefinite. Government officials argue the ban protects national security and prevents the spread of disinformation. Despite international pressure from digital rights organizations, authorities maintain that the policy serves the public interest.

Ongoing Implications

The suspension has forced Uganda digital population to migrate to alternative platforms including WhatsApp, Telegram, and Twitter. Media outlets and civil society organizations have adapted their communication strategies, though access restrictions continue to draw criticism from human rights advocates.
