Tributes have been paid for 32 people who died in a boat cruise accident on Lake Victoria over the weekend. The Saturday evening tragedy occurred hundreds of metres offshore as the boat, carrying an unspecified number of revellers, was en route from one beach to another in Mukono district.
Somali President Mohamed Abdullahi Mohamed Farmaajo said: “Our thoughts are with the families and friends of the victims of the cruise boat accident in Mukono district, near Kampala. We stand by Uganda during this trying moment of grief.”
Vice-President Edward Ssekandi: I join the rest of the people in mourning and praying for the precious lives that were lost in the Lake Victoria boat tragic incident. I appeal to all travellers to always apply the safety measures available on the vessels that they intend to use.” T
he Deputy Speaker of Parliament, Jacob Oulanyah, tweeted: I am deeply saddened by the news of the loss of young lives during a boat cruise on Lake Victoria. I pray that God will grant your souls an eternal rest and comfort your families during this dark time. We mourn with you and please, accept my most heartfelt condolences.”
ICT minister Frank Tumwebaze condoled with the grieving families: “My sincere condolences to the families of those who lost their loved ones in the unfortunate incident. Many thanks to the Police Marine unit for the great and timely rescue efforts. We thank God for the lives saved and we pray for those who lost their live to rest in peace.”
Kyadondo East MP Robert Kyagulanyi Sentamu said was saddened by the loss of lives: “My heart is with the families of our friends, who died in a boat accident on Lake Victoria. May the Lord Almighty strengthen you in this very hard time. It is a sad moment for Uganda.” “I still cannot believe that we lost so many young people on that boat. My heart is heavy. I lost several personal friends in the accident and it is extremely painful. We continue to pray for the families of all who lost loved ones and for a quick recovery to those who are nursing injuries,” the MP added.
Former FDC president Gen. Mugisha Muntu: “A tragic day for our nation. As authorities continue with search operations, I would like to convey my condolences to those who lost friends and loved ones in the boat tragedy. Our thoughts and prayers as a nation are with you. We stand with you.”
