Elly Maate, the Police spokesperson for the Kigezi region

A decisive joint security operation led by the Police and the Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF) in Kabale town over the weekend resulted in the apprehension of 48 suspected criminals.

This targeted initiative aimed to stem the surge in thefts, addressing the growing concerns of local residents as the Christmas season approaches.

Among the detainees, three were women, and the operation uncovered individuals in possession of opium, housebreaking tools, and suspected stolen property.

Elly Maate, the Police spokesperson for the Kigezi region, revealed the outcomes during a press conference at Kabale Police Station on Monday.

The arrests were a response to increased theft incidents during evening hours, affecting residents returning from work.

Mayor Byamugisha Sentaro applauded the operation, citing the recovery of over Shs200 million worth of vandalized street lighting equipment, a matter previously reported to the police.

Mr. Maate emphasized that the arrested individuals would undergo screening with the involvement of area LC1 chairpersons.

Those identified as involved in criminal activities would face prosecution, ensuring a continued effort to secure Kabale town for a peaceful Christmas season
