Sanitary Crisis Grips Koranorya Daily Market in Mbarara

Over 500 Mbarara City market vendors share one toilet

Market vendors in Biharwe, Mbarara North Division, express grave concerns over deteriorating sanitary conditions at Koranorya daily market.

Ms. Kate Byaruhanga, the market’s chairperson, highlights the alarming situation, citing a population of 500 to 600 people served by only one toilet.

Fears of disease outbreaks, especially cholera, loom large as vendors, including children, face unsanitary conditions.

Vendors like Ms. Juliet Ninsiima stress the need for urgent intervention by city authorities to address the market’s poor hygiene.

Ms. Lovence Nakyanzi emphasizes the plight of women, citing heightened health risks due to the lack of privacy and unsanitary conditions.

City Deputy Mayor, Mr. Gumisiriza Kyabwisho, acknowledges the challenges and mentions the ongoing construction of another toilet.

However, he urges vendors to maintain sanitation while awaiting completion.

Despite the market being under private management, Mbarara City Clerk, Mr. Assy Abireebe, asserts the leaders’ responsibility to ensure a healthy environment.

He emphasizes the need for proper sanitation facilities, urging those managing the market to construct enough toilets.

The city is committed to safeguarding the well-being of its people, even if the market is privately managed.
