Police obtain images of Entebbe Expressway murder suspects

Detectives have retrieved the footage of the killers of Merina Tumukunde and Joshua Rushegyera Nteireho.

The two were gunned down at Nambigirwa Bridge in Kajjansi town council along the Entebbe-Kampala Expressway as they headed towards Entebbe.

Tumukunde was gunned down together with Nteireho, a former Civil Aviation Authority security personnel and nephew to President Yoweri Museveni. The motive of the killers remains unknown.

The images were retrieved from the Closed Circuit Television (CCTV) cameras along the route. Addressing journalists yesterday, Police spokesperson Fred Enanga said:

“There is no exact identification of the suspects but a forensic analysis to zero down on the real shooter is underway.” Enanga added: “We are working on cleaning the image to have the suspects clearly identified.” Speaking at Nteireho’s burial, Maj. Gen. Leopold Kyanda, the army joint chief of staff said the deceased was betrayed by a friend and they would be got.

After the murder, Police arrested a number of suspects, including a Police officer whose gun was recovered at the scene of crime and Nteireho’s driver only identified as Timothy. Last week, Police interrogated and recorded statements from Timothy and Tumukunde’s husband, Mark Rugyenza.

It emerged yesterday that Rugyenza was grilled for several hours at a security facility in Kampala, barely a week after detectives launched investigations targeting four city businessmen, including him.

“To question a suspect (Rugyenza) is part of the ‘normal’ ongoing investigations given a certain line of inquiry that has to be followed in a bid to get to what could have prompted the double murder,” said a source privy to the probe. Rugyenza is a businessman running a chain of outlets in Kampala and Mbarara.

Shortly after the murder, investigators asked Rugyenza to shed more light, among others, on his love life and whether his wife was involved in any business dealings which could have led to her murder.

It has been established that earlier, before security operatives again questioned Rugyenza over the murder, investigators had interviewed the bereaved family members, including two sisters and a brother of Tumukunde as well as Nteireho’s elder sister.

Nteireho was reportedly into moneylending business at the time of his death, according to relatives. The murder has been shrouded in mystery.

Bodaboda hitman

Meanwhile, the long arm of the law has caught up with another key player linked to a racket of bodaboda hitmen since the arrest of two kingpins in Kampala two months ago.

Enanga revealed the suspect, Dan Muhanguzi, stole several bodaboda bikes from Mukono and sold them to operators in Bushenyi, where authorities picked him, ending a six-months manhunt for the culprit (Muhanguzi)
