Security agencies have arrested a key suspect accused of leading a violent attack on a resident of Kawafu in Wakiso District.

The suspect, identified as Grace Nabete, also known as “FBI” or “Escobar,” was arrested on February 17, 2026, during a joint intelligence-led operation in Abaita Ababiri.

Police say Nabete is linked to the assault on Richard Batabane, which happened at his home on the night of February 12, 2026.

Police link suspect to Kawafu attack

Kampala Metropolitan Police deputy spokesperson Luke Owoyesigyire said preliminary investigations indicate that Nabete allegedly led a group that trailed Batabane to his residence.

“Preliminary findings show that the suspect led a group that followed the victim to his home and attempted to strangle him at his gate,” Owoyesigyire said.

“During the scuffle, the victim sustained a broken arm and injuries to his leg.”

According to Police, the attack happened late at night. The assailants reportedly fled the scene after leaving Batabane seriously injured.

Social media video drew public attention

While recovering from his injuries, Batabane recorded and shared a video on social media in which he narrated his ordeal.

The video drew public attention to the incident and prompted security agencies to act quickly.

“Acting on credible information and following up on the incident, security agencies mounted a coordinated operation in the early hours of February 17, 2026, which led to the arrest of Grace Nabete in Abaita Ababiri,” Owoyesigyire added.

Police said Nabete is currently in custody to assist with investigations.

Police hunt other suspects

Security agencies are now pursuing other individuals believed to have taken part in the attack.

Owoyesigyire said Police remain committed to protecting the public and ensuring suspects face justice.

“We reassure the public of our continued commitment to ensuring safety and bringing perpetrators of crime to justice,” he said.

Assault among leading reported crimes

The case comes against a wider backdrop of assault-related crime in Uganda.

According to the 2024 Annual Crime Report of the Police, assault was second only to theft among general crimes reported between 2019 and 2024.

Out of 218,715 cases reported to Police countrywide in 2024, 29,580 were assault-related.
