Amidst ongoing police operations to evict non-eligible residents from various Kampala Metropolitan barracks, a tragic incident unfolded at Kireka Barracks.

Demonstrators protesting the evictions clashed with officers, resulting in the fatal shooting of an unidentified individual.

The deputy police spokesperson, Luke Owoyesigire, confirmed the incident, attributing it to rioters engaging in unlawful activities, including blocking roads and throwing stones at officers.

The police responded with tear gas to restore order.

The body of the deceased awaits a postmortem at City Mortuary Mulago, while investigations are underway to identify the officer responsible.

As tensions rise, the Kampala Metropolitan Police is set to collaborate with local leaders to address the situation.

“The Kampala Metropolitan East and Jinja Road Police are actively investigating the circumstances surrounding the initiation of this unlawful demonstration and are determined to identify the officer responsible for the stray bullet incident,” Owoyesigire emphasized as he urged calm.

This incident follows the recent completion of eviction operations in Naguru Barracks, Ntinda Barracks, and Nsambya Barracks.

The broader operation aims to remove illegal occupants from various establishments across Uganda’s capital.
