Parliament of Uganda has pledged to support Darius Wasswa Nuwagira, a toddler whose genitals were bitten off by a dog last year.
Making the commitment was at Sunday Vision’s 6th twins festival, Speaker of Parliament Rebecca Kadaga, who was the chief guest at the event, said she will work with President Yoweri Museveni to ensure that Wasswa gets the treatment he needs.
Wasswa’s plight came to light when Saturday Vision published a story last week, titled, Twin, loses genitals in a dog attack.
On that fateful day, Wasswa, together with his twin brother, Dewinton Kato Nuwagira, were home while their mother, Oliver Kaliyo, had stepped out to fend for the family. Upon returning home, Kaliyo found one of the twins (Wasswa) crying helplessly.
It is at that point that she discovered that Wasswa’s genitals had been bitten off by a dog that had made its way into their house.
New details show that medical reports have indicated that Wasswa still stands a chance of leading a normal marital life in the future, surgical procedures involving reconstructing his penis can only be done when he reaches the age of 18.
It is against this background that Kadaga, with support from Parliament, promised to be part of Wasswa’s journey to leading a normal life.
The Twins Festival, sponsored by Parliament, PostBank and Pepsi, is an annual event that brings together thousands of twins, triplets, quadruplets and other multiples from within and out of the country.
