The two MPs, who were held for one and a half years and are accused of terrorism and murder, were meant to be released from Kigo jail, but according to their family and attorneys, they are still missing.
When their attorneys, led by Kampala Lord Mayor Erias Lukwago, went to the detention facility known as Kigo Prison to pick up their clients, they were informed that the couple had already been sent home by prison officials.
On Monday night, Frank Baine, a spokesman for Uganda Prison, told NBS Television that the two lawmakers had been released in accordance with the court’s ruling.
According to him, the two outspoken lawmakers were at their separate residences as far as he was aware.
The two MPs’ attorneys, however, rejected the allegations, claiming they were untrue.
Erias Lukwago expressed disbelief at the jail officials’ statements that the two lawmakers had already been driven to locations of their choosing, which he claimed they had not yet established.
Supporters and the nation are curious about the whereabouts of the two MPs as Tuesday dawns.
Along with five other people—Mike Sserwadda, Jude Muwonge, Bull Wamala, John Mugerwa, and Jackson Kanyike—Ssegirinya and Ssewanyana are implicated.
They are charged with murder, attempted murder, and supporting terrorism in connection with the wave of killings that occurred in the Greater Masaka region’s Masaka and Lwengo districts in 2021.
Twenty locals were slaughtered by unidentified intruders brandishing machetes during the spate of killings.
