Ugandan athlete Joshua Cheptegei secured his first Olympic gold medal in the men’s 10,000m event in Paris on Friday, solidifying his status as one of the greatest long-distance runners in Uganda’s history.
The three-time world champion triumphed over Ethiopian Berihu Aregawi, who finished in 26:43.44, and American Grant Fisher, who clocked 26:43.46.
Cheptegei completed the race in 26:43.15, thrilling over 75,000 spectators at Stade de France.
Defending champion Selemon Barega initially led the race, showing strong intent in the first three minutes.
However, Cheptegei’s remarkable pace in the final laps of the 25-lap race on the 400m track secured his victory.
