ISO spy  shot in brawl at human rights activist home

SP Patrick Onyango

At the residence of a former female commissioner of the statutory rights organization Uganda Human Rights Commission (UHRC), a male government spy who purportedly left his home late at night for a security operation was shot.

Internal Security Officer (ISO) operative Andrew Kiiza Olweddo was reportedly in a critical condition when he was admitted to a prestigious hospital in Kampala last night, where he was reportedly fighting for his life.

We were unable to determine how the ex-commissioner, who has been detained at the Kajjansi Police Station where detectives have filed a charge of attempted murder against her, and the spy were connected.

The cause of the altercation is still under investigation.

According to statements made by Patrick Onyango, spokesman for the Kampala Metropolitan Police, a struggle broke out between the two, after which the woman—whom we will not name for legal reasons—ran away and barricaded herself in her upstairs bedroom.

The Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF) soldier stationed at Bombo barracks reportedly intervened as the ISO agent started smashing the door glasses to gain inside.

The ex-commissioner and the guard got into another altercation with the spy at around two in the morning, according to the police, when the guard moved his principal from the bedroom to the ground level.

Onyango, a senior superintendent of police, claimed that the guard then acted. He was clutching an AK-47 weapon and a pistol that belonged to her principal.

“The guard used the pistol owned by his principal to shoot the ISO operative in the abdomen,” SSP Onyango said yesterday.

Detectives have located the gun they say was used in the shooting at the former commissioner’s home in Mawanyi, Bwebajja Ward of Kajjansi Town Council in Wakiso District, even though the alleged gunman is still at large.
