King Saha’s fans had every reason to attend his Biri Biri Concert that was held at Kyadondo Rugby Ground, Kampala, on Friday. Currently, Saha is one of the biggest music talents in the industry and some of his songs have been chart-toppers over the years.
For that reason, he has garnered a bigger fan base as witnessed at the show on Friday. The show was set rolling by a myriad of singers, such as Tip Swizzy, Kalifah Aganana, Spice Diana and Fefe Bussi. One of the opening acts that got everyone excited was former Blu 3 singer Jackie Chandiru, who recently made a comeback after a four-year hiatus, in which she found herself taken to rehab for drug addiction.
Chandiru has been performing around town since her comeback, but not yet on the grand stage as Friday’s. So, it was good to see her. Jose Chameleone’s set was also fun and energetic, taking fans through a medley of his club bangers, before thanking revellers for supporting King Saha, his one-time protégé.
It is after Chameleone’s do, at about 10:40pm, that the night’s emcees, MC Kats, Mr Mosh and Flavia Namulindwa invited Saha on stage. But before he got onto the stage, they played his new music video, Bambi, on the jumbotron screens to perhaps give revelers a glimpse of what was to happen the night.
One could tell his fans were ready to party with their star. Lights went off and a navy blue Range Rover was driven onto the stage to wild ululations. And then King Saha disembarked, clad in an animal print costume, symbolic of an African traditional man. He started off with his 2014 hit, Muliranwa. Saha was on stage to tell his six-year music story, which started in 2013, with Signal. With over 20 songs to his name, King Saha’s act showed why he is regarded as one of Uganda’s top vocalists, today.
Some of the defining moments of the show came when he did covers of popular Ugandan artistes, starting with Chameleone’s 2000 hit Mama Mia, to Bobi Wine’s Ndi Mazzi Mawanvu and lastly, Radio and Weasel’s Lwaki Onumya, which he sang with Weasel. Fans grooved to his tunes and sang along throughout his time. He ended his one-hour performance with his current hit, Biri Biri, just a few minutes shy of 12:00am.
