Apollo, a self-made billionaire, was born and raised in Muhanga Town Council, Rukiga District. In the early 1980s, he ventured into business, which eventually led to his remarkable success.
Managing his business ventures under the name Aponye Uganda Limited, Apollo’s portfolio includes notable investments such as Aponye Mall in Kampala, Mega Standard Supermarket, and Aponye Hotel on Ben Kiwanuka Street.
Additionally, his company produces popular products like Apo soap, Kitamu cooking oil, and Ugali maize flour. Aponye Uganda Limited also operates a fleet of trailers stationed at Nalukolongo in Kampala.
Apollo initially gained substantial wealth through his involvement in Panto Bar and smuggling goods to the Republic of Rwanda.
He played a significant role in the coffee, beans, and maize trade during the regime of Milton Obote, supplying merchandise to countries like Burundi, the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), and others.
Furthermore, Aponye Uganda Limited is recognized as one of the major grain suppliers to institutions such as the World Food Programme, the Prime Minister’s Office, the Police, the Prisons, and the East African region.
Despite not pursuing formal education, Apollo Nyegamahe, also known as Aponye, achieved great success and was highly regarded in his community.
He served as the NRM chairman for Rukiga District, showcasing his leadership skills and influence.
How Aponye Met His Death
There was a parked lorry that got a mechanical problem and was parked in the road in the same direction where Aponye was coming from but there were no signs like reflectors warning other road users,” Mr Savimbi Savimbi, a witness, said.
He said the deceased was travelling with four people in the vehicle who sustained injuries and were rushed to Itojo hospital.
Deputy Speaker Thomas Tayebwa expressed deep sorrow upon hearing the news of Apollo’s passing, describing him as an exemplary figure who demonstrated that determination and perseverance can lead to success. Tayebwa emphasized the profound loss of a pillar in the community.
Reportedly, at his son’s recent wedding, Apollo remarked, “Now that Peter has wed, if I die, I will definitely go to heaven.”
At the time of reporting, Apollo’s body remained at Itojo Hospital, awaiting a postmortem examination.
