A Rwandan businessman was shot dead in Kisoro on Monday night. Lambert Sabaho, 52, was shot dead by unknown assailants who were travelling in saloon car.

The incident occurred at about 10:00pm at the gate of his residence near Kisoro Prisons headquarters in Bigina cell, Ruceribuga ward.

His wife, Anastasia Mahirwe, told journalists that she heard his motorcycle approaching and when she was preparing to open the gate, she heard gunshots. Mahirwe found him lying on the ground and made an alarm that attracted residents.

Sabaho owned a local wine factory producing the Isimbi Drink in Kisoro. Sababo is from Impushi village in Musambira parish, Kamunyi district in the southern region of Rwanda. A neighbour, Tom Mucunguzi, said he saw a Toyota Premio car drive away from the scene. Local leaders in the southern division of Kisoro municipality expressed concern over the slow response from the Police.

The LC3 chairperson of Southern division, Denis Mvuyekure, said that they tried to call the Police’s known numbers but the calls were not answered.

Mvuyekure said he called district Police commander Charles Patrick Okoto’s telephone number which went unanswered. Capt. Peter Mugisha, the resident district commissioner of Kisoro, said they had started investigating the matter.

Police said in a statement: “The assailants drove off immediately and the registration number of the motor vehicle was not identified. The motive has not yet been established.”

Sabaho’s body was taken to Kisoro Hospital for a post-mortem examination as residents plan for his burial, considering the difficulty of crossing into Rwanda
