Govt urged to help Muhangi family keep his property

Like they often stood alongside the murram roads braving the dust to marvel at his motor rallying driving skills, hundreds of mourners yesterday braved the heavy downpour to send off motor rally icon Charles Muhangi. Speaker after speaker urged the Government to make sure Muhangi’s family regains full ownership of all his properties he had struggled to recover from‘grabbers’.

“Let the Government help the family so that Muhangi’sproperties are secured to cater for his children,” Rodgers Asiimwe, who was best man at Muhangi’s wedding, said. Muhangi has had a protracted fight with city tycoons over a bus terminal.

He had just recovered the multi-billion property when he suddenly died in his sleep. While appealing to the mourners to give the family support,

Patience Muhangi, his wife, said: “While some of us were in our beds sleeping, Muhangi was spending sleepless nights over his work and nobody should now come up to claim his sweat.”

Muhangi’s mother, Angela Rwankore, told the mourners how Muhangi’s love for cars and driving started when he was still a young boy. Rwankore said her husband Rwankore was murdered during Idi Amin’s regime when Muhangi was aged 14. “At the age of 14 years, Muhangi looked after the family through hardships,” the mother recalled.

The Prime Minister, Dr Ruhakana Rugunda, represented President Yoweri Museveni at the burial where he delivered a condolence message and sh10m to the family. Museveni described Muhangi as a role model in terms of the development of the country. The President commended Muhangi for being the pioneer of modern bus transport.

“Muhangi has left alegacy of being a patriot for our country. If we had many Muhangis, the development process for our country would be far ahead,” he stressed.

Mary Karooro Okurut, the minister in charge of general duties in the Office of the Prime Minister, said Muhangi was a hardworking man.The Bishop of West Ankole Diocese, Rt Rev Johnson Twinomujuni, advised mourners to always have time to relax, especially after going through hardship or hard work.
