Engola family endorses son for Oyam North County parliamentary seat

Samuel Junior Engola, the son of Col (Rtd) Charles Okello Engola Macodwogo, has been put forward by his family as a candidate for the Oyam North County seat.

This comes in the wake of the unfortunate passing of the State Minister for Gender, Labor, and Social Development.

Engola, a member of parliament for Oyam North County, was killed on Tuesday of last week by his security, Private Wilson Sabiiti.

Sabiiti then committed suicide.

It has not yet been declared vacant by the Electoral Commission (EC) in the Oyam North County.

When the Clerk of Parliament informs EC that a seat must be filled, EC issues a detailed campaign schedule so that candidates from all political parties can run for office.

The Engola family, however, has requested that the National Resistance Movement (NRM) think about nominating Junior Engola to run as the party’s candidate in the upcoming by-election.

Chief of the Otikokin clan in charge of Oyam North, Mr. Jacob Okello, has confirmed the news.

“We have consulted him (Junior Engola) and he has also agreed to succeed his father,” Mr Okello said.

Junior Engola, when called on a Monday and he confirmed that he would be succeeding his father as leader.

When the tenure of the 11th Parliament finishes in 2026, Ugandans will once again vote in a General Election.

Mr. Jasper Onena, chairman of the Oyam NRM, stated that numerous candidates have shown interest in the role.

He went on to say that on May 6, the Oyam NRM executives met with some of the hopeful candidates such former ambassador Julius Peter Moto, Iceme Town Council chairman Mr. Alfred Okello Obaro, and medical worker Mr. Augustine Obanga Kenekene.

Also, there’s Queen Dorothy Amolo and former NRM youth vice chair Mr. Willy Omodo Omodo of northern Uganda.
