Bobi Wine Earns Law Degree After Seven-Year Journey, Overcomes Challenges

Bobi Wine, Uganda’s musician-turned-politician, has graduated with a law degree from Cavendish University after a seven-year journey. Despite challenges and a year-long delay, he successfully completed his studies and overcame scrutiny from the National Council for Higher Education

Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu, widely known as Bobi Wine, has officially graduated with a Bachelor of Laws degree from Cavendish University after a seven-year journey filled with challenges and delays.

The musician-turned-politician shared the news in a heartfelt X (formerly Twitter) post, marking a significant milestone in his academic and professional life.

Journey to a Law Degree

Bobi Wine began his law school journey in August 2016 at the International University of East Africa. Despite initial delays and the challenges of balancing his political career with academics, he has now successfully earned his law degree.

This achievement adds to his existing academic credentials, which include a degree in Music, Dance, and Drama (MDD) from Makerere University.

The idea of studying law first took root 20 years ago when Bobi Wine discussed it with fellow artiste and lawyer Sylvester Kyagulanyi while they were both students in the MDD department at Makerere University.

Years later, he finally took the plunge, enrolling in law school with the support of friends, family, and colleagues.

Challenges and Setbacks

Bobi Wine’s journey was not without its hurdles. He expressed gratitude to those who supported him, including his wife, Barbra Itungo Kyagulanyi, and the National Unity Platform (NUP) secretary general, David Lewis Rubongoya. Rubongoya, who was one of his lecturers, advised Bobi Wine to transfer from the International University of East Africa to Cavendish University due to accreditation issues.

Although Bobi Wine completed the necessary requirements for his degree last year, he missed a few lectures in one course unit, preventing him from graduating on time. This setback required him to re-attend the course and wait an additional year before finally graduating. He candidly shared that many of his classmates had already graduated, making the delay even more challenging.

Overcoming Doubts and Scrutiny

Bobi Wine also addressed the controversy surrounding his graduation. Some individuals submitted a petition questioning his eligibility to graduate, which led to an investigation by the National Council for Higher Education (NCHE).

The investigation thoroughly reviewed his academic records, including his application, admission documents, class attendance, exams, coursework, and tuition payments.

After an exhaustive review, Bobi Wine was cleared to graduate, bringing an end to the scrutiny and affirming the legitimacy of his academic achievements.

Bobi Wine’s graduation from law school is a testament to his perseverance and determination. Despite the obstacles and delays, he has successfully added a law degree to his list of accomplishments, further cementing his role as a multifaceted leader in Uganda.
