Bobi to army: “You should have backed my presidency bid”

Opposition Leader Bobi Wine Highlights Missed Salary Increments for Security Forces and Promises Change

In a recent rally in Mayuge Town, Mr. Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu, also known as Bobi Wine, and leader of the National Unity Platform (NUP), expressed his disappointment with the police and Uganda Peoples Defence Forces (UPDF) for not receiving promised salary increments.

He claimed that if he had become President, these increments would have been implemented.

Bobi Wine stated, “Let me remind security what you have missed since Mr. Museveni stole my election; Shs1m for the lowest-ranking police and UPDF officer.”

He emphasized that it has been two-and-a-half years since the election, and President Museveni is responsible for the delay in fulfilling this promise.

Furthermore, Bobi Wine alleged that the 2021 election, won by President Museveni, was rigged, and he believes he won the polls but his votes were stolen.

During his speech, he mentioned receiving symbolic items like a bow and arrow, and in Busoga Sub-region, he was honored with regalia befitting a head of state, including an oar.

“I have been given an oar in remembrance of those who have disappeared in the lakes due to UPDF’s high-handedness; when I return, I’ll be handing over your lake, and when I become President, my first directive will be that all soldiers vacate the lakes,” Bobi Wine declared.

His visit to Mayuge also addressed concerns from fishermen about harassment on lakes and poor working conditions on landing sites, as mentioned by Ms. Rita Nakayizza, the NUP Woman MP flag bearer in the 2021 elections.

Bobi Wine clarified that his countrywide tours are not for campaigning or gaining votes since he believes the people have already voted for him.

Instead, he aims to prepare the people for potential actions in the future.

He mentioned the recent wave of coups in Africa as a manifestation of people’s power and encouraged the residents of Busoga to take power into their hands.

During the rally, former Bunya East and South MPs, Mr. James Waira Kyewalabye and Mr. Robert Ntende, defected from the ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM) party to NUP.

Bobi Wine’s countrywide tour has taken him to various regions, including Mbarara, Kasese, Fort Portal, and Mayuge.

Notably, in the 2021 elections, President Museveni lost in his traditional strongholds of Buganda and Busoga.

In Busoga, Mr. Museveni received 404,862 votes, while Mr. Kyagulanyi garnered 437,059 votes. Mr. Museveni only won in three of Busoga Sub-region districts, suffering defeats in several others.
