At least 20 Uganda People’s Defence Forces soldiers were injured on Saturday when a military truck transporting them to their duty stations overturned in northern Uganda.
The soldiers were among hundreds of recruits who completed training at Labwordwong Military Training School on Thursday.
They were travelling to different military units under the UPDF Fourth Infantry Division when the accident occurred.
Initial reports placed the crash along the Agago-Pader road. However, later information suggested that the vehicle may have overturned in neighbouring Omoro district.
The UPDF had not confirmed the exact location of the accident by press time.
Sources told Uganda Radio Network that the truck had stopped to refuel at the Fifth Infantry Division headquarters in Acholi Pii, Pader district.
It later continued towards the Fourth Infantry Division before overturning.
Military sources said two soldiers suffered serious leg injuries. The remaining victims sustained injuries of varying severity.
The injured soldiers are receiving treatment at the Fourth Infantry Division barracks.
An army officer, who requested anonymity because he was not authorised to speak to the media, said authorities had not confirmed any deaths from the accident.
UPDF yet to release detailed statement
Capt. David Kamya, the Fourth Infantry Division public information officer, confirmed that a military vehicle had been involved in a road crash.
However, he declined to provide further details about the number of casualties or the circumstances surrounding the accident.
The UPDF had not issued a detailed official statement by press time.
It also remained unclear what caused the truck to overturn.
The military truck accident occurred days after another serious road crash in northern Uganda.
An Opit Travellers bus collided head-on with a trailer in Bobi sub-county, Omoro district, along the Kampala-Gulu highway.
The collision killed 15 people and injured 28 others.
